KYIV, Ukraine — A powerful attack on a Russian air base in occupied Crimea was the work of Ukrainian special forces, a Ukrainian government official told The Washington Post on Wednesday, suggesting an increasingly important role for covert forces operating deep behind enemy lines as the country expands efforts to expel Russian troops.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, did not disclose details of how Tuesday’s attack was carried out. The attack marks a significant escalation in the nearly six-month-old war, demonstrating a new ability by Ukrainian forces to carry out attacks further behind the front lines than had previously been thought possible.

At least three explosions rocked the Saki air base Tuesday, in a coastal area of the Crimean Peninsula...

I have thoroughly enjoyed scrolling the various links provided to see what fun has been delivered to Putin’s military. The consternation of beach visitors was interesting. The huge, slow outflow of autos from there remined me of the 17 mile backups of traffic at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on a Sunday afternoon as everyone returns from their week at the Delmarva beach resorts. Actually, since 2014 while 300,000 people moved out of Crimea, about 2 million moved in, reportedly many elderly Russians looking for a warmer climate and Russian officials. Well, perhaps they will now decide to move again.

The before and after pictures were especially interesting, and with no military expertise, I had no difficulty in counting about 11 airplanes disappeared or damaged. I don’t know if it was photoshopped, but there was one photo of a howitzer floating on a raft at sea. Suggesting that one good way to get close was to raft in the howitzer? ;-) Taking credit away from Ukraine for good long distance accurate firiing? Hope to see more successful strikes in the near future. Here’s to success in driving the Orks out of Kerson!!

The damage at the airfield is consistent with a missile that detonated 100-200 feet above the ground. Possibly a fuel-air explosive.

It’s also a good PR move for another reason. Russians are being fed the Putin line that there is no war, it’s just a “minor incursion”. A bunch of vacationers on the Crimea peninsula have just been shown some real live proof to the contrary. He can still spin this, but there is a “this” that has to be spun, and their lying eyes say otherwise.

Except it’s corroborated all over the place in more reliable outlets. Does just being in WaPo make it fake?

“It’s always going to be self-serving no matter which side.”

Right you are. And therefore, by parsing the interests that each side has, you can winnow out the chafe from the grain and arrive at some rough understanding of the truth. For example,

An anonymous Uke officer claims Uke special forces did a spectacular raid. Official Uke sources, claim that it might have been some partisans.

Analysis: Ukraine wanted the raid to take place so that Russians would see that there really is a war, because it interrupted their cozy Crimean holiday with all those explosions. But Ukraine does not want Russia going ape-sh!t, because Russia has nuclear bombs and such, and absolutely no conscience in the leadership. So they intimate anonymously that they dooded it with their special forces, then contradict that and say that partisans not under their control did it on their own. What really happened? Ukraine did something to make the airfield go boom. What, exactly, we don’t know. Maybe a new missile deployed. Maybe partisans. Maybe special forces.

Russia wants to kill this narrative before the people wake up to the fact that Putin is slaughtering brother Slavs and they’re p!ssed about it, and that he’s a lying SOB. So he says just some ammo and petrol cooked up in the sun.

What’s most likely? Ukraine struck an airfield but doesn’t want it to be officially pinned on them.

Self-service illuminates.

probably yes
i know the attack occurred with damages but sure go ahead and believe that uke special forces snuck into the base. maybe but if true thats likely to stimulate some special response.i’m not suggesting that i know how it occurred. more versions will spill out over the next few. i’m not buying the ammo loading accident either ...

And then there’s the other side of the PR angle. Zelinsky wants America and Europe to know that the Ukraine really is fighting hard and making progress, not just stuck in the Donbas stalemate.

He also wants Ukrainians to know that he’s serious about national self-determination, that he hasn’t given up Crimea as a lost cause.
