Starbucks failed spectacularly in Australia. Ever since the end of WW2 Australia has developed a big coffee café culture with the waves of southern European and Mediterranean immigrants. I’m not a coffee drinker but my friends who are describe Starbucks as expensive, pretentious, pig swill.

I don’t know if Starbucks even tried in Italy. There were Starbucks on every other corner in London and other places I visited in the ‘00s, but I didn’t see a single one in Italy.

I suspect it was for the same reason they failed in Australia; there are lovely independent cappuccino and espresso shops all over the place in Italy. Starbucks would be as big an insult as Domino’s there.
