In a new type of scam that's been doing the rounds in Germany since February, people have been contacted by fraudsters posing as national or as international police agencies.
Last week, Germany’s telecommunications regulator, the Federal Network Agency, said it had received 7,600 complaints about a so-called ‘Europol ploy’ in the month of June alone.
The scam starts with a phone call which, when answered, plays an automated message saying that the police are waiting on the line. Users are then asked to press 1 to continue and those who follow the request are connected to a fraudster claiming to be from Interpol, Europol or the German Federal Criminal Office (BKA).
The scammers impersonate officials and tell their victims that they are involved in serious crimes or are victims of a crime, such as identity theft, and urge them to provide personal information and make payments.

Sounds like what the government does with their electric bill.
There is a slew of anti-scammers on You Tube. Really entertaining stuff watching them mess with scammers. The best is when they get access to the scammers computer and show their picture and personal info.
If Germans are falling for this one, they’re a lot dumber than they think they are.
“That’s an OLD scam over here in the states
Ah, the old German Federal Criminal Office scam. We’re wise to those Krauts!
Germany swallowed the whole green energy coolaid. So yes they’re dumber than you might have thought
I’ll point this out...the problem in Germany for this stuff is NOT new. Since 2014, there’s been weekly phone calls like this (just in my region of central Germany).
They call up and say that your relative (niece or grandson) is in jail, and you need to bail them out, because they hit someone. Occasionally, they use the scheme of someone planning to rob your house, and the local police can come by to take your valuables to hold in the local police station safe.
I never ceased to be amazed by the gullibility of some folks.
But in this case, I guess if you are German and the German ‘Police’ tell you to push button 1 on your phone, then you’ve been conditioned to obey.
Some of the anti scammers are hilarious. 🤪😀👍
[In a thick Indian accent] This is Officer Johann Braun of the German police. You will be arrested if you do not send 100,000 rupees, uh 1000 euros in gift cards to my address.
“Delete There Files”
That’s for sure. The Bank Examiner scam goes way back, probably because it still works. There was an item here just a couple of days ago about some old lady getting taken for nearly a million.
