.
My dad was a U.S. Marine on a Navy ship somewhere off of Japan preparing
for the ground invasion of the Japanese mainland when the bombs went off.
Without the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs I may never have existed.
My dad was in the Navy and served on an LST (Landing Ship Tank) in the South Pacific and would have also participated in that invasion. I have the same opinion. I might not exist right now if they hadn’t dropped the big one (twice).
I think it's likely that Truman would have been impeached if the bombs weren't dropped. The sacrifices made by the entire country dictated ending the war as quickly as possible.
Also, the War Department placed an order for over 500,000 Purple Hearts during the planning of the invasion. We are still drawing from that stock today.
Same here. My grandfather fought in the Battle of the Bulge and liberated the concentration camps.
He was waiting to get on a ship and head to Japan when the bombs were dropped.
My dad was in boot camp when Japan surrendered. They were training for invasion.I didn’t know this until right after his funeral. My brother introduced me to a man who had grown up with my dad, went to boot camp with him, and was shipped to postwar Germany with him. This man told me that they knew they were training for invasion. My dad never talked about it. He once told my brother that he thanked God for the bomb; he didn’t think he would have survived.
I don’t think that there’s anything wrong with those of us who believe that we owe our existence to the bomb, to express this.
