For decades, the CCP has claimed Taiwan is its territory despite it being a functionally democratic and independent state since 1949.

Taiwan is not an independent state. This is stated in official US policy that accepts “ one China”. If the sloppy author can list countries that recognize Taiwan as “ independent”, the USA will not be included.
