Because they were DESIGNED that way. The center column and exterior structure were literally MADE that way. In case of a major structural failure, that it wouldn't topple sideways. Bin Laden's original plan was to hit the Towers high enough to cause them to fall over. However, hitting a steel structure with aluminum is a bit like throwing cottage cheese at a chain link fence.

Air compressed by the collapse of upper floors blowing out windows a floor or three below the collapse point may look explosive, with no dynamite involved.
