Walt Disney World Cast Members are now addressing guests as “friend,” rather than sir or ma’am in the latest effort to promote inclusivity.
The neutral “friend” moniker allows Cast Members to address individuals without assuming their gender identity. Similar changes have been made around the resort, such as the switch from “ladies and gentlemen” to “dreamers of all ages” in the pre-fireworks announcements. Some Cast Members had already elected to use “friend” when they address guests, but it has become commonplace over the last few weeks.
In 2021, Disney announced the addition of “Inclusion” as a 5th key, which serve as the guiding principles for company culture. Since then, similar changes, small and large, have been made across the corporation, and the parks have been no exception.
I will not visit Disney World again. Or on another subject, ever buy Nike again.
When my now-teen daughter was tiny the cast members at Disneyland referred to her as “princess” all day long; it was adorable and she and I loved it. I’m glad I don’t have a little girl now…sad no more “princess” greetings at Disney.
Go ahead, call me “friend”. Instead of calling you “Cast Member”, I’m gonna call you out as “Goofy”.

“Friend” as a term of endearment or just social nicety has always seemed to me to be tinged with insincerity. As “automatic” as “Sir” or Ma’am but not about to replace them or their tradition anytime soon .

Terry Pratchett wrote a wonderful series of books, but his public statements got more and more liberal as he got richer. I love the books, but had he lived even a little longer, he’d have been a leading light in the trans theology.
