Hundreds of angry protesters loyal to the powerful cleric Muqtada al-Sadr broke into Baghdad's heavily protected Green Zone on Wednesday, denouncing the nomination of a new prime minister.
Mohammed Shiya al-Sudani was formally nominated to lead the country on Monday by the Coordination Framework, the largest Shiite alliance in the Iraqi parliament. His nomination followed the mass resignation of al-Sadr's parliamentary bloc, a group of over 70 lawmakers who withdrew from the governing body last month in an apparent show of force after months of political stalemate.
Iraq has struggled to form a new government since parliamentary elections in October; Sadr's own attempts to form a government have previously foundered amid opposition from rival blocs.
"If the Sadrist bloc remaining [in parliament] is an obstacle to government formation, then all lawmakers of the bloc are honorably ready to resign from parliament," Sadr said in a televised speech in June.

Somebody get a burka and call Lez Cheney
Now the Shite can get back to handling the Sunis.
Mookie still alive?
The Mookster is still alive and kicking and uglier than Godzilla. IIRC he was the half wit son of a legit Shiite preacher.
AOC is hiding under her bed.
CNN is not calling this an “insurrection.” Interesting.
“son of a legit Shiite preacher.”
The Sadr family has a lineage that carries great weight in the Shiite community, going back way before Mookie’s father (who was particularly well respected/loved as an individual, and martyred by Saddam).
There are communities of Shiites who are devoted to a particular cleric, a bit like Hindus have a devotion to their gurus. It often continues from father to son for generations. It is a Shiite thing.
The new guy is a member of Nouri al-Maliki’s Dawa Party, and a former Minister in Nouri al-Maliki’s Government.
Islam is clan based so they have religious preacher clans too, with lineages. The Sikhs do this I think. The very religious Jews have rabbinc lineages. Internet calls them dynasties.
Maybe we didn’t export enough ‘democracy’.
