I spent some time in Mexico living with a Mexican family. We really have no idea of how “bare” the average life is in Mexico. This family was comparatively “rich” meaning they lived a basically middle-class lifestyle. But crushing poverty was visible everywhere. I blame this on the government. Like in Russia the Mexican oligarchs are fabulously wealthy, and they aren’t about to give up one peso of it. The only “good” jobs are with the government, which owns and controls the oil industry, the electric industry, all communications and probably a few I don’t know about. One of the family members had a good job with the power company. He “bought” it.
The cops are astonishingly corrupt. I sat at an outdoor cafe and watched a cop stopping cars with American plates. He’d say something like, “You give me fifty bucks, or I take you to jail.” That was probably comparatively minor. My friends told me that it wasn’t uncommon for a cop to order you out of your car and to get in and drive off with it. This, they said, is why rental companies would not rent you the car if you said you were going into Mexico. When we rented a car in California, my host said, “No, we’re not going to Mexico.” (They simply HAD to know we were going into Mexico. Come on, a Mexican family with luggage? Really?) By the way this was 2009.
As I traveled around and met people, they almost all had jobs in America but homes and family in Mexico. The most watched cable channel was simply cameras pointed at the border crossings with a voice occasionally saying, “Lane eight. All cars being stopped and searched. Use another lane.” When we crossed all the doors were opened and a dog on each side leaned in and sniffed. Then we were on our way. (The dog and the guards were professional and barely glanced at us.)
The reason I’m telling you this is that even if the US has ordered you to stay out for previous crimes committed, even in the unlikely event you get put into prison, for someone like this, prison is better than living in a cardboard box in some arroyo. The poorest person in America lives better than most Mexicans. And, in Mexico, no one is going to give you money just because you’re poor. We do that here.
Why would us citizens risk going into Mexico in th first place? Defies understanding.
The abundant population can be traced to the Catholic Church.
