Finally, a reasonable comment. I can't believe the judgmentalism of some people on this thread. As you say, Hawley was presumably following orders - probably delivered with some sense of urgency - to leave the chamber ASAP. He would have had no idea what the intentions of the mob were or whether they were armed and posed a serious threat to his safety.
