For decades, the ONLY U.S. cases of polio have come from the weakened version of the vaccine. I have no idea why the UK would use the weakened version instead of the dead version at this time.

It’s cheaper. It’s easier to give someone a sugar cube than it is to vaccinate them with a syringe. The oral vaccine gives longer lasting protection.
