Why put an “s” on parent?

Living together unmarried with kid’s father and then broke up because welfare is cut or destroyed if the father lives in the home with mother.
Married and divorced? Full custody to mother in the divorce.
Teens who are given their father’s cell number find out it has nothing to do with a phone.
