A day before Maryland's gubernatorial primary, former President Trump laid into incumbent Gov. Larry Hogan, calling him a "Shutdown RINO" (Republican in name only) over his COVID-era lockdown policies.
Trump took to Truth Social on Monday to advocate for his preferred candidate, state Delegate Dan Cox. He also took aim at Cox's top Republican challenger, Hogan-backed former Maryland Commerce Secretary Kelly Schulz.
"Maryland, tomorrow is a big day," Trump wrote. "Get out and vote for Dan Cox for governor. Get rid of Shutdown RINO Larry Hogan who is trying to get another RINO into office, Kelly Schulz," the former president wrote.
"Dan Cox will be a great governor. Tomorrow is the day. Get out and vote!" he added.
Hogan, a self-described moderate, is ineligible to run for a third term as governor under state law. However, the blue state governor has floated the possibility of running for president in 2024.
In a phone interview with CBS News last week, Hogan said he was weighing the possibility of running more and more due to his belief that Republicans are fed up with the former president.
"There's a diminishing number of folks that are wanting the former President Trump to run," the Maryland governor told the network. "There's a growing number of people that are looking for our kind of successful, bigger-tent politics."
Still, polls to succeed the anti-Trump Republican for governor have been close, with one conducted by Goucher College in late June showing Cox at 25% and Schulz at 22%. Other minor candidates totaled 7%, and a whopping 45% said they were still unsure.
Democrats have an even more open field competing Tuesday. Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot, Wes Moore, and former Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez are all virtually tied in surveys.

Hogan also joined the pile-on slandering DeSantis over the parental rights bill.
Dan Cox would be good. I think a lot depends on turnout. The tougher hill to climb will be in the general election.
Hogan won't garner 50K votes nationally.

Hate to be the one to break it to you, Hoge baby, but the facts just don’t align with your “big tent” assertion.
As a matter of fact “diminishing number of folks” better describes you RINO clowns.
I find it hard to believe Schulz has that strong a showing. Cox has really gotten out to make his name known.
I’m not big on in-fighting.
So, I wasn’t crazy about Schulz’s attack ad on Cox. Nor am I crazy about Hogan’s back-biting on Trump and DeSantis, or Trump mouthing off on this stuff, either.
Yes he would, but he can't win the general.
Hogan doesn’t see the Republican Party changing, the news Rs wouldn’t pizz on you if you were on fire.
It might be in our interests to have Trump challenged wouldn’t you say? The issues get put out there-the ones that don’t have to do with him. Who would it be-Hogan, Kasich, Liz? One would threaten to run 3rd party anyway to peel off their GOP vote. That’s how sick the never Trumpers.
Will Liz Cheney learn anything from the shellacking she’s gonna take in Wyoming? She’ll be happy to blow them off.

I hate to hear this. Fighting is the only Republicans are going to change. Not fighting just gives us more of the same.

You can’t just one day wake up and announce that you are running for President.
It takes years and years of ground-work prior to any announcement.

It's Maryland. Dan Cox has a snowball's chance of being governor, even if he does win the nomination.
More importantly Hogan won't garner more than a fraction of a percent of the vote in any GOP primary.
Not totally true.
But I do fear his alleged “purity” may mean indeed, he does lose to the Dem, as “too conservative for Maryland”, as the stupid TV ad goes.
