he National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023 authorizes taxpayer funds for the U.S. Department of Defense to research and develop plant-based proteins for members of the military.
The congressional legislation, H.R. 7900, establishes a “Pilot Program on Research and Development of Plant-based Protein for the Navy.”
The bill stipulates that by March 1st, 2023, the Secretary of the Navy “shall establish and carry out a pilot program to offer plant-based protein options at forward operating bases for consumption by members of the Navy.” Plant-based protein options are defined as “edible vegan or vegetarian meat alternative products made using plant and other non-livestock-based proteins,” according to the bill.
At least two naval facilities will be made to participate in the pilot program and “prioritize facilities where livestock-based protein options may be costly to obtain or store.”

An army needs animal protein. There is no doubt over this at all. biden is deliberately weakening the military.
And cut into recruitment...
I think you are right ...
There were days when we were farming full time that Hubs needed 4,000 to 6,000 calories per day to maintain. He was in his 40s at the time.
There’s no way active young guys in their 20s are going to get enough to eat getting fed as proposed. I’ve fed teen-age sons and it’s like a shark tank.
Got to be one of the dumbest ideas ever.
Maybe the college boys in the wardroom will be served this but I’ll bet my last dollar it won’t be on the menu in the Chief’s Mess.
Ditto that!
U.S. Navy orders huge amounts of toilet paper.
Gonna be a lot of leftovers.
SOS...One of my favorites at midrats in the USN.
They’ll use this as a way to pay China for soybean crops on the land they already own in the U.S.
Soy protein is terrible for people with thyroid issues, including genetic propensity for it, as in having Irish heritage. And thyroid problems are rarely diagnosed until the symptoms are quite severe. Then it’s often difficult for average medical care consumers to receive appropriate treatment; sometimes it takes months or years to hit on the proper dosage regimen. Until then, severe lack of energy and a host of other symptoms that are often mistaken for depression, laziness, overeating, and many others.
These might be good for fast days if you are an Orthodox Christian!
Otherwise—Nein! Nada! Ne! No Way!!!!
PHOOEY to the climate jockeys!! PHOOEY forever!!!!
“Just skip straight to bugs!”
In a few years they can make a new recruiting commercial: “Eating bugs... it’s not just for Army rangers anymore!”
I ate at a Fleet Activities cafeteria style facility run by Japanese staff 24 years after WWII was over.
They did an outstanding job. The food was great and served very tastefully.
The worst thing I ever had to tolerate was occasionally some OLD Japanese man serving the food in the cafeteria line along with a dozen others would get a little belligerent with one of the GI’s. We would all laugh and that would just make him madder.
No more Sunday morning steak and eggs (to order) for the duty section?
Never had a bad meal. My ship won awards as the best feeding ship in SERVLANT all three years I was aboard. I gained twenty pounds. But work (deck ape) and sports kept my waist at 32".
