When did we appropriate "bodega" for the neighborhood convenience store?

Here in Texas, I have never heard anybody use the word. All I ever hear is "convenience stores". Maybe in the Spanish-only speaking parts of town they use it. I first heard the term a few years ago when there was a commercial featuring Troy Aikman at one of those stores in which the clerk and people in the store did not know who he was. An article about the commercial said "Aikman goes into a bodega". I had to look it up at that point to find out what it meant. I still don't use the word. But then I do not live in the abomination of desolation that is NYC.

I agree. But cops who mindlessly arrest crime victims for fighting back against criminal assailants are also a problem.

Individule cops are not judges, juries, prosecutors or defenders. They have a simple job - and a list. The
‘list’ says who they bring in so the ‘other parts’ of our justice system can have a look at them. Sometimes that list includes ‘a person who has killed another person’...
