There was an old boardgame called ‘Junta’ where players took the leadership roles in a rickety banana republic. Graft, backstabbing, and improving your position in the junta were the meat and potatoes of play. If a subgroup of players didn’t like how things were going, they could announce a coup and the game shifted to a kind of short wargame where players fought to keep the old or or install a new dictatorship. The winner was the player who both kept their head and the most money in an out-of-country account.

Back in the 70’s and 80’s, it could be an uproariously fun time. Now I see more and more that our own government exhibits the symptoms of a banana republic. I keep wondering if there’ll be a knock on the door and a pair of well-heeled agents greet me with, “So, Junta is GAME to you???”
