Ukrainian forces could wipe out all of 'exhausted' Russian troops' territorial gains, retired US general says

Ukraine could push Russian forces back to its pre-war borders by 2023 — wiping out its territorial gains — because President Vladimir Putin's troops are "exhausted," a retired US general said on Thursday.

Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, the former commanding general of the US Army in Europe, told Insider that Ukraine's ability to push Russian troops back to the existing borders depends on continued Western support through sanctions and weapons deliveries.

"The Russians are exhausted," Hodges said. "They don't have much else they can do right now."

He added that much of Putin's military is already committed to the war, but Russia has had little territorial success to show for its efforts after 20 weeks of war.

What Ukraine Forces? From what I have read Ukraine has lost a lot of their military.

Remember, the Russian people and Americans are natural allies!

We had very friendly relations with Russia until the Bolshevik coup. They recognized us during our revolution and supported the Union during the Civil War. We could have been friends again.

Ditto on that. China has got to be looking at the fact that Russia is right now weaker than ever. Time to grab the brass ring!

Screw Russia. No way we’ll lift a finger to help those pricks after months of nonstop nuclear threats.

You mention this quite frequently. I assume this is one of the highlights of your life?

Sadly, I just listened to a report about the horrifying battle on the frontlines in Donbass. The dug in Ukrainians are being bomdarded by Russian artillery. The reporter talks about the smell of burning flesh from the terrible bombardments.

War is hell.......

Ah someone who understands history, very few understand what Russia did for us during the civil war. Both England and France were looking at taking us out during that time, to which Russia said they would consider it an act of war against them.

Of course Russia was also the last real country to stand up to the den of vipers….the central bankers. I still believe their and our, resistance to central banking, put both of us on the target list. It is unfortunate that both our countries fell to the bankers in the end, the same as Britain and France had centuries before.

Back to the topic: This general, is he one of those that swears to overthrow Trump should he be elected President for the third time?

I’m amused at how unserious the Neocon/Neolib enablers are. If that is truly Hodges view, I know more about the war than he does, and so does anyone else who follows independent and Russian sources (which have proven far more reliable than Ukrainian sources). Somehow, though, I think he knows the truth and is not telling it for some purpose or other. Alexander Mercouris, whom you cite, is actually passing on what Vucic, the President of Serbia, recently said. Vucic has good intel and has a lot at stake.

Why anyone who claims a senior military background would push nonsense like “the Russians are exhausted” is baffling. The heavy lifting for the Russians has been done by their heavy weapons, especially their artillery. The tanks and infantry mainly go in and clean up after the UFA positions are shattered. The best UFA soldiers are mostly dead or badly wounded now. What the UFA has remaining is, for the most part, territorial units and conscripts, who, through no fault of their own, are no match for the Russians.

If anyone is exhausted, it’s the UFA in Donetsk/Lugansk. They have been beaten at every turn and have had to constantly retreat through country paths to avoid being encircled, all the while having to endure a brutal heavy weapons bombardment every single day. The tempo of the Russian advance is increasing now because the UFA is exhausted and beaten in Donetsk. The battle for Seversk is essentially over, as is the battle for Soledar. No one thought it would happen this quickly. The Russians are also closing in on Bakhmut. It may well be that the entire UFA defensive line is collapsing. We will see.

Among the “Rah! Rah!” war crowd here, what I see are minds stuck in the 80s that are easily influenced by the huge psyops campaign that the Biden administration has waged (along with NATO, especially the UK, the Neocons/Neolibs, and the other usual suspects). They don’t know anything about Russia as it is. Instead, they project the old Soviet Union onto Russia, it seems because it is easier than learning something new and is emotionally satisfying. As a result, they fail to see that in MORE THAN A FEW respects Russia is more in line with the values here on FR than our own government. Some also think that the Russians are no more technologically adept than the Soviets. That kind of hubris born of ignorance is toxic. It enables corrupt elements in our own government; it encourages the pointless destruction of the brave men of the UFA (excluding the Neo-Nazis, who need to be killed); and, it completely misunderstands the nature and origins of the conflict, as well as contributing to misunderstanding the geopolitical situation the US actually is in.

If Vucic is right, the EU and NATO will be shattered, the WEF will be crippled, if not made irrelevant, and perhaps the Biden administration will be so discredited that no amount of voter fraud and leftist lying will be able to stop a gigantic red wave. The “pro-Ukraine” commenters here (who don’t realize they are actually helping the administration, Neocons, WEF, etc.) need to realize that this country is on the edge of a totalitarian transformation and that they are encouraging the wrong side.

“...Russia has had little territorial success to show for its efforts after 20 weeks of war.”

This is too stupid for words. It assumes that all territory is of equal value, as if 1 million acres in West Texas (outside the Permian basin, of course) is more valuable than 5,000 acres in Austin. In this war, the ethnic Russian areas in which the war is being fought 1. have been heavily fortified by the UFA over the last 8 years and 2. account for 60%-70% of Ukraine’s GDP. Outside of the cities where most of the fighting is centered in this region you find mostly open fields. Controlling the cities and the surrounding villages results in control of the fields. So, the Russians are methodically taking out the strongest UFA fortifications and taking the economic heartland of Ukraine in a way that minimizes collateral damage to the ethnic Russians and infrastructure there.

Maybe I could sell Hodges a big piece of West Texas at Austin prices since he doesn’t understand how to value real estate.

Very interesting and informative contrarian view to the classic FR pro-uke view. I am only halfway through viewing but stopping temporarily to thank you for posting.

I suspect that if the Russians take Poltava, Ukraine thereafter might cease to exist as a political entity.

Bombing the Kerch Strait bridge still seems possible but now it seems to be a side show.

Only an imbecile would believe that.

It's time put up or shut up, Speedster. Want to make a little wage on that?

This sort claim is delusional. It's being made to suck more money from the American taxpayer.

“So Like, Russia is not getting the money to reload its war machine and station Satan missiles in South America?”

Wow!

A “So” to begin the statement.

A capatalizes “Like” thrown in.

A question mark ending for a non-question.

Correction: women and older citizens volunteer to hash your cannon fodder compatriots. Currently, there is no mobilization in Ukraine.
