Like many of his male friends, Serhiy no longer leaves his home in western Ukraine for fear of being sent to the front line to replace soldiers killed or injured in the fight against Russia.
The construction worker spends his days hiding from military officials serving call-up papers at bars, beaches, checkpoints, malls and even church services.
One woman complained that officials even chased an 18-year-old riding his bicycle to serve his call-up documents. ‘It’s like some kind of wild boar hunt,’ she said.
‘Why do you need to send to war a person who doesn’t want to go there if, like me, they aren’t motivated or properly trained?’ he said.
Men have been served call-up documents at the entrance to a church in Lviv, reportedly sparking protests from priests.
Another group of men were issued with call-up papers while detained by police at a Kyiv nightclub after the 11pm curfew. Officials claimed 219 received conscription notices.
Ivan, 35, a computer specialist, said that ‘every day’ he sees messages on social media about people in his sector being handed call-up papers ‘in the most random places’
‘I don’t see anything wrong with me not going to the battlefield and helping from Kyiv,’ he said.
Since the end of April, several videos have been posted on social media by frontline soldiers saying they lack the right leadership, training or equipment – and in some cases refusing to fight.
Thirty soldiers from another brigade said they had retreated because they did not have a leader and were dumped as ‘unprepared people with no military experience’ in a combat zone.
Another group of 60 in a rifle battalion said they were ‘thrown’ on the front line without suitable training and then attacked with phosphorus weapons by Russians.

When a country is fighting from it’s own soil there is much that healthy old men and females and even the very young can do away from the front lines.
I would not be surprised if codifying gay marriage is one of the conditions the US puts on Ukraine for getting more American aid and weapons.
I’m guessing America makes ‘em fly the rainbow flag if they want any American help, aid or comfort.
Just a guess, of course.
Conscription existed in the American Civil War on the Union side, and as I recall reading history people could pay a certain sum to get out of it. Immigrants fresh off the boat at New York often found themselves in the Army too. There were anti-draft Riots.
There was a draft during World War I as well. That wasn’t very popular either.
“No right to yell ‘Fire’ in a crowded theater” was how a supreme court justice described anti war or anti draft demonstrations at the time. Wilson ran for a second term as president on “He Kept Us Out of War”.
Daily Wochenschau is a blind squirrel which has found a nut for a change.
“neocons are Trotskyites.”
If you mean united only in their opposition to the “bourgeois” Soviet form of Communist rule, perhaps.
IMO, basically, the term “neoconservative” is no longer relevant for contemporary political analysis and significantly out of date! The term neoconservatives used by some is mostly to be construed as a slur word for being the ‘Left.’ By denying others as Conservative, the projection is THEIR group alone deserve to be called the true conservative.
Actually, I believe the umbrella term “conservative” now includes a blending of right-of-center ideologies: neoconservatism, libertarianism, Christian theocrats, paleo-con with some conspirators!!! I frequently see this new conservative alliance demonstrated in discussion comments with fellow freepers.
With our culture sinking to new immoral levels, there appears to be a unity NOW shared with traditional conservative–thought: economic, cultural, secular intellectuals, and religious traditionalists. Conservatism is strongly value-based, good and evil-focused perspective,i.e. the evil of the continuous bipartisan welfare-state expansion. All conservatives want to decrease the federal government and repair the shared balance of powers between the states and federal government as well as restoring the distinctive checks and balances of the Executive, Legislative & Judiciary branches of government.
Anyway, that is my new understanding & I’m sticking with it!
Let us work together to accomplish our national goal for citizens to enjoy freedom & liberty under a responsible government. :)
I’m visiting at a friends house. His father joined in 40, went to radio school and was assigned to USS Lexungton in 41. After Lexington went down, he was assigned to Yorktown. After Midway he was assigned to an attack transport, and as a radioman he was assigned to a beach masters party at Tarawa. He wanted back on carriers, and ended up as a radioman on USS Fanshaw Bay. Flagship of Taffy 3. He was collecting a message on the bridge to take to the flag office but when he got there there was a large hole where the hull used to be. I found this out when I noticed his retirement plaque from 1956. During the Korean war he served on the USS Monrovia, one of 4 in a class pf APAs. Another in the class was the USS Calvert, the ship my dad served on during the Korean war. So a good friend’s dad and my dad were in the same place, same time, on sister ships. Small world, and we just connected those dots this July 4th after knowing each other for 32 yrs.
“Our Great Leader”
HA! Totally captures his image!
Remember Attu and Kiska!
Could very well be true. I am not inclined at all to assist the Ukraine in any way given the people and entities who call themselves allies of Ukraine, including the entire Democrat Party, the Left worldwide, Soros, Trudeau, and the list goes on.
If those people who wish ill on this country are for it, I am against it, because in their calculus it helps them meet their goals in some way.
Your characterization of it as “hauntingly true” is spot on accurate and appropriate.
There is something “haunting” about it, as if war is a stalking beast, and your needs, wants, and desires are completely irrelevant in the scheme of things.
needs to be said again
with emphasis
NO, Totally disagree.
We may agree that the Biden family is despicable.
The Truth is this is all on Putin
2022 is Putin’s SECOND INVASION!
Putin’s 1st invasion was 2014.
BTW, that is only an electronic petition submitted on-line to Zelenskyy’s office.
then we will have to agree to disagree
I value your friendship. I am not following any theorists for my beliefs.
