WARREN, Mich. (AP) — While the growing expansion of casinos and state-sanctioned sports betting steal the spotlight, state lotteries have nearly doubled in size over the past two decades, driving a multibillion-dollar wealth transfer from low-income U.S. communities to powerful multinational companies.

A nationwide investigation of state lotteries by the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism at the University of Maryland found that lottery retailers are disproportionately clustered in lower-income communities in nearly every state. The investigation’s analysis of cellphone location data shows that the people who patronize those stores come from the same kinds of communities.

That’s funny. I would have expected that it was Disney theme parks and Disney cruises were cleaning out the wealth in low income communities.

They’re a regressive tax on the people who can least afford to play.

End lotteries, now.

Many times though not always, those needy people may be on Government assistance. Most of the people in low income neighborhoods are not paying money to the IRS. They may in fact be receiving Gov. Money. Their purchases of Lottery tickets may be their only contribution to the USA.

The poor pissing away their money on lottery / scratcher tickets is their freedom of choice. Not my problem or my concern.

From 1984. Orwell was right about this too.

They were talking about the Lottery. Winston looked back when he had gone thirty metres. They were still arguing, with vivid, passionate faces. The Lottery, with its weekly pay-out of enormous prizes, was the one public event to which the proles paid serious attention. It was probable that there were some millions of proles for whom the Lottery was the principal if not the only reason for remaining alive. It was their delight, their folly, their anodyne, their intellectual stimulant. Where the Lottery was concerned, even people who could barely read and write seemed capable of intricate calculations and staggering feats of memory. There was a whole tribe of men who made a living simply by selling systems, forecasts, and lucky amulets.

They’re actually a tax on people who don’t understand math.

State lotteries are a case of the government taking over a business that used to be run by the mob—the ‘numbers racket’.

American “poor” are light years of the Third World “poor” people. Not an adjective/noun that should even be used.

Thats why lotteries are awesome. We get our tax dollars back from the po, but even if a po wins, they instantly spend it all and will be po again

Used to work with a guy who had a long history as a trainer in the military. He liked to tell the story of an instructor of his who would dismiss his men for liberty\leave by telling them that while they are off base to “don’t do dumb things”

seems like many many many of the less financially well off would do well to follow this advice.
