Abortion in Illinois imperilled if GOP takes control of the state Supreme Court in November "If we lose this election, there is absolutely no guarantee that abortion will be legal past 2023," an abortion rights advocate said.

CHICAGO — Illinois lawmakers took steps to make abortion rights untouchable before Roe v. Wade was overturned, but an upcoming judicial election could undermine those safeguards.

Two seats on the Illinois Supreme Court are up for grabs this November in the second and third judicial districts, both of which surround Chicago.

Right now, Democrats hold a slim 4-3 majority on the court. But if the Republican judicial candidates win in the two suburban districts that only lean Democratic, the GOP will take control of the court for the first time in decades.

And that could spell trouble for the legions of Midwesterners now flocking to Illinois for abortions from neighboring states where the procedure has been banned, advocates say.

udicial elections don’t often grab the same national attention as other political races in which voter turnout is often much higher, but observers say the Supreme Court races in Illinois could foreshadow similar battles in other states over reproductive rights with sweeping consequences.

“If we lose this election, there is absolutely no guarantee that abortion will be legal past 2023,” said Terry Cosgrove, president and CEO of Personal PAC, an abortion rights advocacy group.

Anti-abortion efforts remain active

The courts managed to bottle up the parental notification law for more than a decade until the Dems had a large enough majority to pass a new law undoing it. (Illinois used to have a decent number of nominally pro-life Dems)

Now their majorities aren’t enough?! Sheesh.

vacation in a blue state and get an abortion, order meds to do it on line and never leave home and no one knows the difference. This is their flag of defiance and control and that’s all it is

Don't forget that this is Illinois.
If there are two open seats, there will be four democrats elected.

Try closing your legs! Or taking the pill. What is wrong with this people?

I live in DC. You should attend a function (party, meeting, etc) where it has gotten so hateful. The hate began with Obama.

Between gangs killing each other and black WOMEN gleefully killing their babies pretty soon there be a very minimum black component to America-JUST like the hooded KKK and Jim Crow writing dems and Margaret Sanger wanted. Think about THAT.

Dems STILL run the inner cities like the plantations.-terrible education, dilapidated housing, minimal healthcare, broken families and no hope of ever escaping. Right dems? Kenneth Stamp’s Book “The Peculiar Institution”. Here is a short (under 3 min) history of dems creating slavery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYHED3dR214

Pritzker is already running ads against Bailey on the issue. Dems love abortion so much that before their primary for Secretary of State, an office which has nothing to do with abortion policy, the candidates ran ads claiming to be the most “pro-choice.”

Blacks have been replaced by Hispanics as the largest minority. No sign that will ever reverse. In a paradoxical way, this development may ultimately have. a salutary effect on the black community.
