The issue is not that mentally ill young men get guns. It is that there is no particular urgency to identify and constrain such people.
He wasn’t that mentally ill. He could tell the difference between a place with armed guards and the big GUN FREE zone around Highland Park. He wasn’t mentally ill, he is evil and a coward.
