I live in a county with a sheriff who has publicly stated on numerous occasions that he will not enforce gun confiscation laws. As far as the military is concerned, one in three is not an overwhelming stat, even if it is accurate. It’s one thing to shoot at foreign civilians in combat and quite another to shoot at mom etc.

I also live in such a county. Although anecdotal, this is indeed a concerning stat to me since I speak to many of them on a regular basis. In their eyes, they won't be shooting at mom and pop. They will be shooting at "the enemy." Remember, these aren't the cream of the crop when it comes to academic achievement, and a highly structured environment with someone telling them what to do is what keeps them happy and functioning. When you ask them about taking the covid vax, their response is: "No problem - anything for my country."

I understand your points. I was just considering that when soldiers are fighting against their fellow citizens they may not only be shooting at their own relatives etc., but at those of their comrades in arms as well. I hope it never comes to this point.
