I respectfully disagree. NATO was created in 1949 because the USSR was gobbling up Eastern European countries and forcing them into the Soviet sphere under Soviet domination, ala the “Iron Curtain.”
A lot of people think the creation of NATO was the reason the Soviets began taking over the Eastern European countries. However, the Soviet “Iron Curtain” began months before Nazi Germany’s final surrender in May, 1945; for instance, Romania surrendered to the USSR in August, 1944 and was wholly and uncontrollably occupied by the USSR and was absorbed into the Soviet orbit.
Today Russia is back to aggressively pursuing its territorial ambitions, and has been doing so for at least twenty years.

And I think Lithuania is expecially concerned since Russia is now trying to transport who knows what across it to that little Russian enclave on the Baltic sea. What mischief might Putin planning with a port of call on the Baltic and who knows what military measures secretly going there. My mother’s parents came from there in the 1890s when it was called East Prussia, so I am especially interested.
