Back in the day, just about every state in the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains would elect one Republican Senator to represent their values and one Democrat Senator to get their share of federal pork.
Simpson was, I think after Orin Hatch, the first to break this pattern. He turned out to be almost as big of a disappointment as Liz Cheney of Virginia.
