Disgusting comment. He was not a fool, he simply did not understand the one time happening of the gigantic size of the Indian camp. So his normal attack that worked at Washita and a dozen Civil War battles turned into a route.
Simpletons today love to kick him around, but the fact is, his aggression was classic cavalry.... and it saved the nation.
Got overextended once, but it’s tragic, not foolish.
Easy to judge from a recliner.

Those sailors executed what was likely the most consequential AND heroic attack in US military history. I hope somehow they know how they are universally revered today.

Her battle ensign was saved and brought back to the States. It’s currently on display at the University of Washington.

Wow, the nomenclature across the ensign's header says:

U.S. ENSIGN NO 11 MARE ISLAND MAY 1942.

The "NO 11" is a size code, approximately two feet by four.

Mare Island Naval Shipyard is near San Francisco. Sammy B never visited that shipyard, so the ensign must have been issued from stores maintained at that location.

From all accounts Commander Evans, a Cherokee from Oklahoma and a Navy Academy graduate was one of those who people we think of when people say, “Where does this Nation get people like that.”

And how can we fail, so long as we have them?

I remember that book, but I don’t remember the Roberts being in it. The RMS Empress of Ireland was a part of that one.

He seriously underestimated his enemy and overestimated the capabilities of his weaponry; he also wouldn’t wait for backup. He was a fool.
