Tensions are mounting around the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, an isolated but strategically significant territory on the Baltic coast that could soon be dragged into the Kremlin’s war.
Russia has reacted furiously after Lithuania banned the passage of sanctioned goods across its territory and into Kaliningrad. But Lithuania says it is merely upholding European Union sanctions, and the European bloc has backed it.
The row now threatens to escalate strains between Moscow and the EU, which has unveiled several packages of sanctions on Russian goods.
Here’s what you need to know about Kaliningrad, its history and its importance to Russia.
What sparked this row? Since Russia invaded Ukraine in late February, experts have feared that Kaliningrad could become a flashpoint in tensions between Moscow and Europe.
It is Russia’s westernmost territory, and the only part of the country surrounded by EU states; Lithuania stands between it and Belarus, a Russian ally nation, while Poland borders it to the south.

Journalism is dead, so they don’t bother to mention at all that Lithuania has a treaty with Russia that guarantees passage of goods to Kaliningrad

Russia doesnt honor its treaties, why should Lithuania?
Europe’s borders have been moving back and forth for a thousand years.
Let the Europeons have their wars. They love them.
It is time for Panzerlied.
The only recourse for violations stated in the treaty is action against the carriers of the other party. In other words, reciprocal restrictions.
I would add: signed the same year as the Budapest Memorandum with Ukraine.
Its funny that CNN doesn’t know that Europe as a continent extends all the way to the Ural mountains. Moscow, St Petersburg, etc. are all European cities.
That wasn’t a treaty.
General Patton had the right idea of what to do in Europe in the spring of 1945. Hence why they had to silence him by any means necessary.
Put Angela Merkel on top of a tank and let her lead her Fourth Reich to victory.
LOL
Russia can always ship from any of their Black Sea ports, down through the Mediterranean, up the English Channel, through Kattegat, and into the Baltic. They are not totally blocked, they just have to make a detour.
This is also notwithstanding the fact that Ukraine dithered on implementing the various provisions of the Minsk I and Minsk II ceasefire agreements with Russia, so neither they nor Russia are entirely innocent in this whole geopolitical snafu.

Can't blame them. I wouldn't honor our treaties too when our side does underhanded crap to provoke them.
You can always swim to Hawaii, rather than catch a flight.
Why should you not poke bears in the eye with a stick?

Russia doesn’t even have to do that: It has direct access to the Baltic Sea from St. Petersburg.
Why does “Berlin Airlift” come to mind? Those chickens took their good sweet time coming home to roost.
