Engineered California

Instead of drilling and processing oil here in the state, California, with enormous energy reserves, has emerged as the largest U.S. importer of energy and oil, much of it from Saudi Arabia and, before that, Russia. It’s not just oil workers being displaced, but other blue collar industries—manufacturing, construction, energy—that have traditionally employed ambitious, upwardly mobile working-class people of all races. Governor Newsom has expanded credits for entertainment, a key source of progressive support, but most industries have not been so lucky. Since 2008, California has created five times as many low-wage as high-wage jobs and has the nation’s highest poverty rate, adjusted for costs.

Anybody not making $200k+ in CA is royally screwed. Teachers, firefighters, police officers, shop keepers, librarians, retail clerks, garbage collectors, auto repair mechanics, sewage plant operators, cable TV installers, road repair workers, plumbers, carpenters, electricians...you name it, every blue collar person we depend on is screwed. I honestly don’t know how CA keeps any blue collar trades people in the state. Or at least within 50 miles of the coast from Mendocino to the Mexican border.

This is a frequent theme of Victor Davis Hanson. He grew up on a farm in Selma, CA and still lives there. He commutes to the Hoover Institution on the Stanford campus in Palo Alto, so he sees both worlds. He loves the honest, hard-working people in the farmland as much as he detests the Silicon Valley and Stanford professor people he works with.

California is the template that the Left uses to convert a moderate to conservative state into perhaps the most liberal state in the country. Its economy is at best closer to that of a Western European social democracy than of a market based model, and heading into Third World status. Coming to a state near you.

Just following the downward spiral started by Jerry Brown in the 1970’s. He killed the logging and sawmill industries because of the fake Spotted Owl crisis. This also started the buildup of fuel on the forest floors throughout the state, setting the stage for the massive wildfires they’re experiencing today.

"the fake Spotted Owl crisis"

I forget about that "crisis" when I post the lists of predictions that never came true. Thanks.

Didn’t they burn up all the spotted owls in a forest fire?

California has huge reserves of oil and gas. Especially off shore.
The companies have done a lot of test drilling and mapped the oil reserves very well.
But the enviros prevented any drilling, so the companies gave up and released their findings to public.
So now, all oil engineers and geologists study California oil reserves and learn on these findings.
To get oil in Saudi Arabia, you learn the layers in California first!

BTW, the oils slowly leaks anyway. Probably pollutes more than if they used it!

No, IIRC, NO spotted owls died. They flew away, to avoid dying.
