t was the fall of 1986, some six months after the catastrophic Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant explosion, and a group of soldiers suited up to enter the radiation-riddled site. Their task: Clean hundreds of tons of expelled, highly radioactive, nuclear fuel from rooftops near the reactor.
Dressed in what appears to be foul-weather gear, one of the young men cinches his gloves and tightens the drawstring of his hoodie to shield his cheeks. Another slips a .1-inch-thick piece of lead, thinner than the protective coverings provided for dental X-rays, over his back. Some insert the sheets inside their undershorts, creating what is cheekily referred to as an “egg basket,” to protect their private parts.
“Radiation is nonsense!” one of the men crowed on camera as his buddies goofed around and put bunny ears behind each other.

The Chornobyl disaster has some extra-ordinarily strange parallels to the COVID response. Primarily in how many lies were told to the public over the course of time - causing dramatically more harm than was necessary.
The one different...Chornobyl was a legitimate massive risk not just to Ukraine, but a major part of the world (the US has dramatically elevated radiation levels detected that originated at Chornobyl - imagine had it gone the way it nearly did...).
Here in the US - with COVID - the government response made it exponentially worse across all aspects of life - from physical, mental, emotional, economically, etc. In Chernobyl - the government DELAYED response caused massive problems (still coming to light now decades later in high cancer rates, among other issues) - but at least the government finally took logical steps and turned the tides.
New? It’s a few years old. No matter, it really is very good and a must see.
The new documentary “Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes,” premiering Wednesday on HBO, exposes the shocking lies the Soviet government fed its citizens in an effort to downplay the dangers of the Chernobyl explosion — even as officials who knew better protected themselves.
Thanks, I thought it was referencing the excellent HBO mini series. I am guilty of the post before reading crime.
Coming soon to America, thanks to the courtesy of the Biden Administration. They tried with COVID-19, but they failed when the American people realized that they were being deceived. They will find another way.
Yes the HBO miniseries was EXCELLENT and historically correct if recall correctly.
What ALMOST happened at Chernobyl would have been a REAL disaster. What actually happened was not.
The HBO mini-series was one of the best docudramas the network produced. The lies that were told by the Soviet government was astounding. The bravery of the fire brigade, soldiers, and miners who did the cleanup under horrific conditions cannot be forgotten. I would bet most knew they were going to die but did the work anyway.
If anyone thinks it was a documentary then I pity the idiot.
In what part it was historically correct? It includes a couple of anecdotes based on real stories but that is all.
