How does this work? An American travels to Ukraine, and joins a Ukrainian military unit. Maybe he did that for idealistic reasons. Or maybe he’s working for some shadowy company, and he really is a mercenary. Anyway, his ID papers are all in order, They say he’s a member of the Ukrainian army. Then he’s captured.
Is he a member of the Ukrainian military, or is he a mercenary? How can the Russians differentiate?

Passports, and don’t forget dual citizenship, something I know much about. Doesn’t matter if military, their passport is the deciding factor… and I will not get into the slippery slope of revoking your citizenship- yes I know a few.
