So far as I can tell the Soviet assembly plants use engines and transmissions imported from overseas. Looks like they need to spin up their heavy industrial and machining capability.
That’ll just take a few decades.
So far I can tell Volkswagen, Fiat&Chrysler and Mazda used to import engines made in Russia.
