Russia-Ukraine war: 1,200 civilians 'held hostage' at Severodonetsk plant, separatist says

LONDON — A Russian-backed separatist official said that at least 1,200 civilians, including 127 children, are being “held hostage” at a chemical plant in the besieged Ukrainian city of Severodonetsk.

Speaking to the Russian state news agency TASS, the pro-Russian Luhansk People’s Republic’s interior minister, Vitaly Kiselev, alleged that Ukrainian forces were keeping civilians at the Azot plant “against their will.”

“They have been held there against their will for quite a while,” he said on Wednesday, according to an English translation of the news release. “There is no water, no food, no medicines.” According to the official, it is believed that the civilians are in the building’s bunkers and underground tunnels.

The city of Severodonetsk remains at the center of Russia’s current major assault in what has been coined the “battle for the Donbas” — a breakaway region that is supported by Russia.

The bombardment of the Azot plant echoes the siege at a similar chemical plant in Mariupol last month. Thousands of Ukrainian fighters and civilians took shelter in the plant until mid-May, when soldiers finally surrendered.

From the onset of the Russian invasion, Ukraine has been using human shields and has been taking hostages.

In violation of human rights laws and in commission of war crimes.

Yet no nation in the west calls them on it, and in fact continues to enable it.

I read that the people in Severdonetsk went there on their own to escape the bombs several days ago - so now they’re saying they’re being kept there against their will......nah that’s propaganda again.

Surely those families decided on their own to flee westward into the industrial zone and shelter from bombing under a chemical plant!

Russia has offered humanitarian evacuation route north or east, to Russian held zones of the LPR

The neonazis and 600 foreign mercenaries refuse and want to go to Lysychansk…which is impossible because the Ukes blew the last bridge to thwart retreat across the river.

They are surrounded…so…checkmate.

Its pretty clear that especially since the Obama-Nuland Coup of 2014, the regime in Kiev, and particularly the radical-nationalist-nazi elements that control their policy, see the Russian-speaking citizens of Eastern Ukraine as enemies to be exterminated.

Ukraine is using human shields:

Russia has killed civilians in Ukraine. Kyiv’s defense tactics add to the danger

“Virtually every neighborhood in most cities has become militarized, making them potential targets for Russian forces...”

You reflexively accept as truth anything from TASS or .ru or any other Russian source, without so much as a question.
Why is that? Propaganda is rife in this war, from both sides; yet, you never challenge pro-Russian sources. Again, why is that?

This is very interesting. This supports my theory that European countries are going to bail on the US and NATO one by one. The handwriting is on the wall.

Use logic.

The shelling has been ongoing for over a month. For 3 weeks of that there were THREE bridges across the river to the west...intact. Yet Ukrainian forces did not evac civilians out? Those civilians CHOSE to stay in that hell? Under a friggin’ chemical plant that was the principal target...

Nay.

Hostages.

“Again, why is that?”

Somebody has to do it.

Otherwise it’ll never be heard.

And this is mainstream media.

AND if you look at my posting history on this subject you’ll find I have never posted a Russian media source, and have, on several occasions posted from Ukrainian media.

You should take back what you said.

A sloth could have escaped that city within a 3 week time period, but a willing human is unable and is now underground as well?

Nope.

Hostages.

Reminds me of Ukraine mining the Odessa port and blaming it on Russia.

What the hell do you call TASS? TASS is the original source of the article you posted.

“You should take back what you said.”

Why would I do that, since I just proved the original source was TASS?

There are (at least) two sides to every story. It makes zero sense to ignore or ban the side you don’t like.

“There are (at least) two sides to every story. It makes zero sense to ignore or ban the side you don’t like.”

I challenge BOTH sides. But the pro-Russia posters are not so objective. There are about a dozen hardcore pro-Russia posters on FR that promote pretty much exclusively pro-Russia sources.

And I have NEVER called for a ban on ANY source. But I do call for accountability.
