Nothing new- my father was NYPD for 23 years. 17 years on the job, after being a highly decorated NYPD detective for 5 years, he took the sergeants test and was passed over for promotion by people who had half the experience he had (8 years to his 17) and got half the score on the exam (44 to his 92). Passed over simply because he was white and they weren’t- quota hirings.

He was part of a massive lawsuit in the 80’s on the situation, a lawsuit that went nowhere. SCOTUS finally ruled in favor of situations like this, the New Haven Firefighters case, around 2009, but he had already died.

The NYPD had standards about new recruits that were hired at one point. After the federal consent decree is when 5’1 women who were not capable of detaining a 6’1 male perp, strung out on PCP, were walking the beat with their painted nails, long hair and gear that they clearly did not have a handle on. Now, the NYPD allows visible tattoos, sloppy uniforms and police who patrol the subways who I have seen playing on their cell phones with their backs turned to the crowd and no awareness of securing their sidearm. Standards have been lowered so much. Then there are the female firefighters who can fail all of the evolutions of the physical agility test and still get hired. Does anyone want a 5’1 110lb female who cannot wear the 65lbs of bunker gear needed to be the one to drag you out of a burning building?

Men and women are physically different. Fact. If a woman can do the same physical agility requirements as a man, then she deserves the job. Otherwise, she is a threat to the department and the public.
