Land of Lincoln now Trump turf — at least among Illinois Republicans

Former President Donald Trump wields a powerful spell over Illinois Republicans with a majority declaring him as their top choice for the White House in 2024 and even more believing legally he should still be there.

More than two-thirds of the state’s GOP voters believe Trump actually won the 2020 election. And nearly nine out of ten still like the combative former president.

Those are some of the conclusions of a new Chicago Sun-Times/WBEZ Poll that takes the political pulse of a state GOP eagerly trying to regain its political footing in Springfield but facing a split between its rising Trump-allegiant wing and its longtime establishment wing seeking to avoid being clipped.

I'm detecting that the media are getting frustrated.

Their "Trump didn't win" narrative just doesn't seem to be working.

The people smell a rat.

I think the worse off you are, the more you look for someone like Trump to turn it around. Pull up a map of gas prices on Gasbuddy and you’ll see Illinois silhouetted by neighboring states, yet we all remember when Lardass Prickster took office he doubled the state gas tax to “put IL on par with its neighboring states”. Just another lie. We saw him break his own covid rules to send his family on vactions, and much more.

Not everyone pays attention to politics but just about everyone knows when they’re been lied to and screwed.

Abraham Lincoln: First president to suspend the Constitutions and set a precedent for future presidents to follow.

Yay executive orders!

Yay imperial presidency!

Yay democracy replaced by bureaucracy!

We sheeple are too stupid to know what's best for us. We need Ivy League grads to tell us what's what.

Who needs silly habeus corpus anyway? That's some silly old Latin term. Isn't Latin a dead language anyway?

1/3 of Democrats think Senile Joe was cheated in.
What’s wrong with the other third of Republicans?

“Abraham Lincoln: First president to suspend the Constitutions”

that’s why Dummycrats love Abe. He’s the only “Republican” president they like. Countless movies, media about the dude freeing the slaves when freeing the slaves was the last thing on his mind.

IL conservatives ought to seek every elected seat from school board to state senator outside the boundaries of Cook County. Try in this cycle to knock off the rinos and the small seat dems.

Yeah, we have bigger problems now, than dwelling on the lost cause, thank you very much. On the other hand, both the left and the confederates hated and opposed the US. Jefferson Davis was 10 times the tyrant Lincoln was.

What’s wrong with the other third of Republicans?,?i>

Those are the guys who supported guys like Nig Jim Thompson and Chuck Percy. Later they hounded Pete Fitzgerald out of running for re-election, allowing Obama in.

Trump praises Lincoln, so did Reagan and Goldwater. Blame the traitors who tried to destroy the Union and the Constitution.I'm not biggest Lincoln fan though. 2 and half years of dewatering.
Now, Lincoln can be blamed for his general mistakes. Andy Jackson would have crushed the rebellion quickly.

Confederates left the US and tried to rend the Union asunder. Not just rebelling against the government. The Articles of Confederation and the Constitution declared the Union perpetual (unbroken). The Left rebels against the Constitution and the Union as well. I always stand with Andy Jackson: The Union must be preserved.

Max, I normally agree with you, but on this, it is very obvious that Lincoln and the whole Republican party were completely against slavery.

The party was created around that.

Regardless of this stupid poll from NPR, the Illinois GOP are feckless assistant democrats and have been my entire adult life. The congressional districts are gerrymandered so it matters not who I “vote” for.

F them.

I have relatives in Illinois who I know voted for Obama twice, and then voted for Trump twice. In their cases, it wasn’t just how they voted that changed. It was also how they began to see life. I know that a lot of people, especially downstate, have had enough of the burden Illinois Democrats have placed on their lives through taxation and mismanagement of the state. Now, whether that means much as far as elections go, considering the nature of the Republican Party in Illinois, remains to be seen.

From the horses mouth...so to speak.

"...I would save the Union. I would save it the shortest way under the Constitution. The sooner the national authority can be restored; the nearer the Union will be "the Union as it was." If there be those who would not save the Union, unless they could at the same time save slavery, I do not agree with them. If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them. My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union..."

“IL conservatives ought to seek every elected seat from school board to state senator outside the boundaries of Cook County.”

That would require actual work. I know from personal experience that the IL GOP isn’t interested in honest work.
