Why is everyone assuming the justices all leave town when the court adjourns for the year? They all live in the area, don’t they? They’re not there like congress critters who fly in from their home states when Congress is in session.

Well, Roberts goes to Hupper Island in Maine…
“Why is everyone assuming the justices all leave town when the court adjourns for the year? They all live in the area, don’t they? They’re not there like congress critters who fly in from their home states when Congress is in session.”
++++
Because they do. Each Justice has their vacation plans already made and are out of the D.C. area on the first of July unless there is a major emergency. They go to an out of the way place, drink a few beers and go fishing, fly overseas to a cottage they rented specifically for this year, etc. All with a few family members, or trusted friends such as former clerks, or law school buddies. Those trusted few do not leak a word about their whereabouts. The Justices normally do not hang around D.C. for the summer.
Thomas reported that he and the Missus own an RV and enjoy driving around and seeing America. Often, he said, unsuspecting people remark on how much he resembles the SC justice, and he replies, “Yeah, I get that a lot.”
