In painstaking detail, and with brutal new footage of the attack at the U.S. Capitol, the House Jan. 6 committee began to lay out its case Thursday that the insurrection was planned — and that it was only the most conspicuous component of a sprawling and illegal offensive by then-President Donald Trump to remain in power.
"President Trump summoned the mob, assembled the mob and lit the flame of the attack," Liz Cheney, the Republican vice chair of the panel, said during its first public hearing.
The committee's work is most clearly aimed at the Department of Justice who will decide whether to bring charges against Trump and members of his inner circle.
That helps explain why there was strikingly little grandstanding by members of the committee — only Cheney and Chairman Bennie Thompson spoke at Thursday's hearing.
The panel allowed the evidence to speak for itself.
There is much more to come in the way of demonstrating Trump's role in coordinating a multipronged attack on the election and the peaceful transfer of power.
In the most straightforward telling, the panel contends that Trump used the power of the presidency, the legal system and ultimately violence to try to erase the 2020 election and seize a second term.
But the details matter if the committee hopes to compel the Justice Department to go after him.
Caroline Edwards, a Capitol police officer who was knocked unconscious during the melee, testified Thursday night that the attack was like a "war scene" as cops engaged in hours of hand-to-hand combat with Trump supporters bent on disrupting the count of electoral votes inside the Capitol.
The question is whether the evidence presented at Thursday's hearing and its sequels will sway the Justice Department to take action against Trump and his allies.

What evidence, what did I miss?
Found out the other day that the Capitol Police were almost 1/2 staffed due to Coronavirus with faulty radio’s and on and on.
I know a number of people who took the short drive to Jan.6 protest and all have been to dozens of events, like myself, in DC over past 40 years.
They all noticed a striking lack of Police presence. There were few if any porta potty that are always lined up by hundreds and no trash cans…The DC mayor and others deliberately failed at the basics for this event..
This does not excuse the small thug element who committed violent acts, but this security set up was unprecedented and the real terrorist must be smacking themselves for the once in a lifetime missed opportunity…they could have walked right in…
The media, schooled by the Left in how to form and incite a mob, honestly believes that mere innuendo stands for “evidence”. So given the innuendo - Trump planned it all - was set by the Left and their fools for tools among the Dims, all the Left had to do was get the Dims and the media to keep repeating the innuendo.
What is totally amazing and horrible, for society, is that you can listen to all the mere innuendo and see and hear the millions of indoctrinated folks in the public just, robotically, nodding their heads in assent. THAT is the frightening part.
Journalists are inherently low-IQ. They are the only people I know that spend tens of thousands of dollars and go into debt to go to J-school only to learn how to write on a 6th grade level and ask/answer the five W's. And they are not able to do that after they graduate and get a job.
They lack all critical thinking and objectivity. They can't see what that sham was on Thursday night. It was a one sided show trial. There were no competing opinions allowed. There was no defense. It was a failed Hollywood production meant to sway people's emotions. Where are the mainstream journalists that can see that staring them in the face?

It’s interesting how these a$$hats are always yammering on about “the peaceful transfer of power” when they are the same ones who obstructed the “peaceful transfer of power” after the 2016 election. They conspired and colluded with the FBI, the media, foreign powers, the Pentagram, and each other to overturn the results of the 2016 election over a 4 year period. If anyone is to be put on trial for an insurrection or coup it is they themselves.
They why were the protesters allowed inside?
This is being run just like the two impeachment trials.
Who opened the Capital Door? Why were protesters waved in? Where is Ray Epps? …the man who rallied the protesters to go inside the capital?
There isn’t any evidence- it’s all gaslighting. They are so afraid of the truth coming out that they won’t even allow Trump to defend himself agaisnt the made up charges
