In my town the way it works is the buy backs are coordinated with the local PD. At the buy back pay out the PD takes custody of the firearm right then...and then they go on to melt down, crush etc.

I always put the ‘border’ at 79th - not that it makes a hell of a lot of difference; in the ‘Hey Jackass’ stats, Auburn-Gresham is #2.
But the key point is by making guns the focus (not that long guns are used that much in gang mayhem), Pfleger is distracting from the key problem, which is the whole culture of violence that permeates that chunk of the Southwest Side (and the West Side Austin/Lawndale/Garfield Park axis). Until that’s dealt with, bodies will keep piling up in the city.
