In a potentially seismic shift in the Republican race for governor, downstate farmer Darren Bailey has seized a 15-percentage-point lead over Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin less than three weeks before the Illinois primary, a new Chicago Sun-Times/WBEZ Poll has found.
The survey of 677 likely Republican primary voters taken Monday and Tuesday by Public Policy Polling showed the first-term senator from southern Illinois opening up a commanding lead over Irvin and their four other primary rivals, marking the first public poll to put Bailey ahead of the pack.
A total of 32% of respondents said they’d vote for Bailey if the primary were held this past week. Only 17% chose Irvin. And the downstate lawmaker was beating Irvin not only on his own rural and small-town turf but also in the vast stretch of Chicago suburbs, where the Aurora mayor had been expected to do well.
If the numbers hold, it would represent a brutal repudiation by Illinois’ Republican voters of Irvin, his array of mainstream party endorsements and, most pointedly, his $50 million benefactor, Chicago hedge fund tycoon Ken Griffin.
As the new polling suggests, Griffin’s designs on installing the mayor of Illinois’ second- largest city in the Executive Mansion may be on the verge of getting chewed up and spit out like wheat chaff by a Bible-quoting archconservative who has driven a combine for a living.
For Irvin, the results from the Sun-Times/WBEZ Poll suggest that his campaign may be losing steam at a crucial time. Irvin is now fending off not just TV ads from Bailey and rival candidate Jesse Sullivan, but also from the Democratic Governors Association, Pritzker and a dark money group airing its own critical ads.

I prefer Bailey.

Really - is it corn? soybeans?
Maybe great for the GOP, but the only problem is that the number of downstate farmers is dwarfed by the number of inner-city gimmedats in the general.
Southern Illinois is more “southern” than the deep south!!
I’ll hold my nose and vote Bailey, I won’t like it and he’ll most likely lose the general but it’s as good as it gets here in the land of Crook County.
I like the trend, but I am kind of surprised. Irvin has ads everywhere, and they sound really good. The only problem is that, on closer examination, he seems to be lying all the time about himself and his opponents. I know that’s not unusual, but his ads have taken it to another level. Plus, as I have found out about his performance in debates — he performs very poorly and skirts any difficult questions. I guess it’s different when you are taping an ad and reading a script.
Democratic Governors Association launches ad seeking to boost Darren Bailey in GOP primary
The GOP-e deserves its every loss.
Just like Mohammed Oz in Pennsylvania. He needs to read from a Sean Hannity script to try to sound conservative. He is a total fraud. Say NO to Sharia Law loving Oz! Vote third party in the Pennsylvania general election for senate.
They’ll arrest him as soon as they can figure out how to charge him.
Okay - now I get it. It wasn’t a typo in the mode of “Hugh!” and “Series!” LOL
I thought you were gung-ho for the communist? What changed?
One, I had to look it up. I couldn't believe Aurora is the 2nd biggest city in Illinois. I figured it was Rockford. Great piece of bar trivia.
The ads for the Aurora mayor are really good. I was looking him up, because I saw the ads and was wondering, Who is this dude?"
I have seen no ads FOR the downstate guy
I've seen negative ads against both guys, but not from each other, I think the democrat PACs are hitting on them both. Which seems like a waste of money now. The negative stuff on the Aurora mayor is graft and corruption, paying off buddy stuff. As for the downstate guy, it was so "negative" I thought it was a positive ad when I first saw it. "He supports Trump. He supports carrying guns" I was like, my kind of dude! Nice ad. Then it started saying stuff like "Out of touch with Illinois" and realized it was a negative ad. But all the stuff they were negating, I thought was a positive.
In any case, I'm sure either guy is an upgrade.
I have heard of that allegation — from Irvin’s ads. I was a little skeptical of the ad’s presentation of Bailey being asked about it in an interview and he said he loved the support. There is a little skip in the video that looks like it could have been edited and Bailey was answering a different question. (I haven’t seen the original so I don’t know.)
This is why it is important to know where the ads are coming from. This verifies DGA support for Bailey. That’s one problem. If Bailey indeed loves the support, then that is another problem.
As I said before, there are three distinct groups of the clown posters who want to keep Congress in the hands of the Democrats.
1. Democrat plants.
2. Trailer trash dumbs.
3. Crazies.
I’ll hold my nose and vote Bailey, I won’t like it and he’ll most likely lose the general but it’s as good as it gets here in the land of Crook County.
What’s wrong with Bailey? I think he and Rabine are good.
My reasoning for electing the Frankenstein Fetterman is that he is very ill and most likely will croak in the next 12 months. This would give Republican governor Mastriano the ability to appoint a true conservative to the senate.
Pennsylvania cannot risk having the Islamist Oz in there. Under no conditions can we let ISIS get a toe hold in the senate. No way!
I don’t see many questioning “poll’s” with all of the articles quoting them as when in 2016 when Trump was running and the majority had Clinton way ahead?
Bailey for me, too. It seems he only recently took started taking off the gloves, and patience just might pay off for his campaign. Both Ervin AND Pritzger have been ganging up on him, and now he’s responding.
