A mentally ill man caught on video ruthlessly beating a cellphone store employee in Phoenix has been arrested, police said.
Michael Cook, 33 — whose family said he has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia but doesn’t take his medication regularly — was arrested Tuesday in the brutal attack on a Cricket Wireless employee, Phoenix police said.
Department officials previously posted a 57-second clip of Saturday’s attack, which occurred as Maria Coronado, 22, was working alone at the store.
“How can I help you?” Coronado asked the man in the clip identified by cops as Cook.
The disturbed suspect immediately launched himself onto Coronado, taking her to the floor and punching her relentlessly as she screams and pleads for him to stop, the footage shows.
The agonizing assault continued as Cook got back onto his feet and began stomping Coronado. He then walked off into a back room — where he allegedly stole cash and phones — as the battered worker ran out of the store, according to the clip.
Cook has been charged with robbery, kidnapping, assault and criminal trespassing. His mother told cops he was not taking his schizophrenia medication at the time, KSAZ reported.
Cook told cops he heard voices in his head to kill himself before assaulting Coronado. Police said he also admitted stealing three cellphones, selling two of them later for fentanyl and methamphetamine, according to the station.
Coronado needed several stitches to close a gash on her face and had a fractured nose.
“He was evil,” she told KSAZ. “He knew what he was doing. This was premeditated. He came four times the whole day, just seeing if there were customers, if I was alone. On Wednesday, he literally told a manager, ‘I’m going to come back and kill you.'”

A little nit picking here:
How is he charged with kidnapping?
A firearm would have stopped this attack.
Phoenix TV CBS station reported:
Court documents say Cook hit the woman 13 times in the head and face. As she was hit, she dropped her phone, and Cook picked it up.

S.O.B.
its a choice....its a choice to beat someone half to death.....no excuses....put this animal in a cage and leave him there......
People like this is why I do not go out unarmed.
However, very, very few seriously deranged people take their meds. The result? A chronic schizophrenic who's convinced that there are killers behind that trash barrel will sometimes assault,or kill someone.Perhaps with their fists...or a baseball bat...or a big scary semi automatic rifle.
SPJNK.
I doubt it. He used the element of surprise ... a very powerful weapon ...
I wondered the same thing. Maybe they should have said
“false imprisonment’ instead, since he would not let her go during that beating.
Amish? Should I look?
That was a Hate Crime, in today’s prism of viewing violence.
Where’s the Asian mafia? A goodwill gesture would cross color lines. Proud Boys are so yesterday and already pigeon-holed. He’ll be free awaiting trial.
Too many of these incidents posted here. Not saying it’s not happening but this $hit could be taken care of on the local level. The cops won’t do it. Me, I got my guns at home. I don’t need a cop.
We need to bring back the State Mental Hospitals.

So the charge can be dropped as part of a plea deal. State doesn’t want to pay for a trial. Let’s the public defender claim he did something for his client.
Just guesses.
Psychiatric Hospitals institutions were defunded and closed for economic reasons declaring community-based treatment sufficient and main-streamed patients into communities.
[read political agenda interference].
Today, many times individuals who really do require institutionalized intensive psychiatric care find themselves homeless or more and more in prison. Mental health care for individuals with serious mental illness has been shifted to correctional facilities.
Private mental health hospitals still in operation do not accept insurance and can cost upwards of $30,000 per month. For low-income patients, Medicaid is the only path to mental health care, but a provision in the law prevents the federal government from paying for long-term care in an institution.
This results in many individuals experiencing a serious mental health crisis end up in the emergency room. Between 2001 and 201, data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey: 6 % of all emergency department patients had a psychiatric condition. Nearly 11% of those patients required transfer to another facility. But, often there were no beds available.
“We are the wrong site for these patients,” Dr. Thomas Chun, an associate professor of emergency medicine and pediatrics at Brown University.
Most hospitals are unable to take care of people for more than 72 hours. Then, patients are sent back out into the world without adequate access to treatment.
To bridge the gap between hospital stays and expensive community-based care options,an option for “a continuum of care” could be developed to range from outpatient care and transitional-type housing situations to inpatient care.”
You can’t prevent someone from leaving by force. She tried to get away and he held her back. The duration is short but can be used to add kidnapping to the charges. This video really angered me. Would love to have been there to release my building frustrations on him.
