Correct, and if we were talking about President Romney instead of President Trump, I would agree with you.
Phil Crane ran to the right of Reagan in 1980. He was a rising star. His star fizzled out, easily taken out by the Manchester Union-Leader.

Don’t forget that Reagan ran against President Ford in 1976, and it didn’t hurt Reagan’s political career.I don't think DeSantis will run against Trump because he respects Trump and wouldn't want to undermine Trump's 2024 run with a contested primary. It could be argued that Ronald Reagan's primary challenge undermined Ford's re-election run against Carter.
