Leo Tolstoy’s ‘War and Peace’ and other works that glorify the Russian military will no longer be taught in Ukrainian schools, Kiev’s ministry of education announced on Tuesday.
Tolstoy’s internationally recognized masterpiece joins the list of 20th-century Russian books banned in Ukraine long before the current conflict.
“All these will be completely excluded from foreign literature,” first deputy Minister of education Andrey Vitrenko said in an interview with the TV channel Ukraine 24. “So, for example, ‘War and Peace,’ this will not be studied in Ukraine anymore.”
The ministry is still working on the final list of works by Russian writers that will be excluded from the curriculum, Vitrenko added.

This mindset or cancel culture, the thought process behind it all, has a childish nature to it, but we all know it is truly dangerous. I was thinking the other day it is remarkable Mein Kampf is still accessible .

“Excluding from the curriculum” is not the same as “banning” or “book burning”. You can stop clutching your pearls, Mabel.
To be fair, War and Peace is such a weighty book even in the original Russian that in many English speaking parts of the world, “war and peace” is slang for something that you’ll never get to the end of it.
And that slang originated in the days when people READ books. These days, for the iPhone generation, anything longer than a tweet is TL;DR.
It’s a great book, but I wouldn’t put it on the curriculum either.

Apparently they never read it. It hardly glorifies the Russian military. But does go into great detail on Napoleon kicking their ass and burning down Moscow.
The Russian winter and poor strategic thinking beat the French, not the crappy Russian military.
Good book by the way...hardly like a Russian novel at all.
To say that Napoleon kicked Russian ass is a bit of an overstatement. Borodino came quite close to ending the way Waterloo did.
I disagree.
A huge part of the problem in the world is that people are not taught how World War 2 came about. History is taught in abstractions, or in personal stories, or in battlefield accounts.
Yes they can be manuals for Nazism. But they are also cautionary tales. They can tell you far more about the philosophy behind the architects of World War 2 far more than any third party account. So for entirely counterproductive reasons, Mein Kampf is left out of lesson plans, but diaries of people in the wars are not.
In a few decades time, the Russia-Ukraine conflict will be taught in history as many others are. I really hope that we don’t make the same mistakes. Find any conflict started by a warped ideology, and somewhere you’ll find the villains telegraphed their intentions and monologued their reasonings years before they actually went ahead and did it. Mein Kampf is only one example of an advance manifesto.
That means kids should be encouraged to study Dugin’s “The Foundations of Geopolitics: The Geopolitical Future of Russia” and Putin’s “On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians”. If you haven’t read both of these publications, then it can be difficult to understand the deep emotional and romanticised roots of Russian expansionism.
I bet a lot of people who take a very one-sided view of this conflict, haven’t read either of ‘em. But it’s impossible to read both and not see, quite literally, how they are tantamount to a playbook for the Russia-Ukraine conflict of 2022.
Soros’ “The Bubble of American Supremacy: Correcting the Misuse of American Power” could maybe serve as a contrasting ideology, from the non-Russian side. But I haven’t come across anything on that front that really explains what, specifically, focused the NWO’s interests in Ukraine.
The most fascinating questions about this conflict in 50 years’ time will be directed not at Russia’s motives which are very well documented, but at understanding the motives and actions (and desired outcomes) from the NWO which are far less transparent.
