How many US solar panel producers are there?

We all recall Solyndra.

I remember that Musk had a company in Buffalo, NY that was supposed to build solar panels. NY/Cuomo made a big deal about it a few years back. Then I never heard anything more about it.

Why have a tariff IF it is not benefiting or protecting any US manufacturers?

It is kind of like putting a tariff on Chinese flat screen TV manufacturers. Who benefits?

I bought my solar panels from Mission Solar, panels made in Texas.

I wanted to get LG solar panels made in Huntsville, AL (closer to home). But for the life of me I couldn't find out exactly which LG models were made in Alabama and which were made in South Korea. That Huntsville plant was recently shut down.

First Solar is made in Ohio.

It is sad. Solar panels were invented at Bell labs in the 50s. We had 95% of the manufacturing marked up until the 80s. But it isn’t just China, we’ve been losing marketshare for 40 years to other countries (initially, mostly to Japan).

~%1 of solar cells are now made in the US, 67% in China. I don’t think it is a critical market, so not worth tariffs at this point to protect a few companies. Solar panels are a luxury item, not a necessity.
