I’ll take the inflated dollars at 65 thank you very much.
Retirement has been my opportunity to do things I never got the chance to do, like learning to play guitar. I practice every day. I’ll never be any good — I lack talent! But I love every minute of it. I don’t understand people who are bored in retirement; but maybe that’s because my career sucked. I don’t have a lot of money, but just enough is enough. Freedom is what matters.
So the “plain meaning” of the Bible is flexible?
“Obviously”, as you say, is neither obvious, nor correct. You perhaps have made the mistake of making a rule/principle on one special instance in Scripture.
Not trying to pick another fight here, but the Bible does not advocate for retirement the way it is done in the USA (and other industrialized nations) in the 21st century.
The Bible standard is “work 6 days”, rest on the Sabbath.
Take a year off every 7th year.
50th year is the Jubilee.
The year a man gets married he takes 12 months off to ...?.... prepare his home ...?... and be ready for first child...?.... (Definitely time to go to work after that.)
Of course, many Christians were slaves back in NT days. Many people are some level/type of economic slaves nowadays. But slaves work/ed when they are told. So maybe if a slave is told his working days are over and here is some money that “we set aside for you” it is okay?
For the most part I agree with the assertion of Raycpa; I think he got it right. In fact, God told Adam that he would have to work in order to make the earth produce food for him to eat. Don’t recall anything about a time limit.
I learned a long time ago that it's not so much what you earn, but what you get to keep that matters, so I've lived, hardcore, by that maxim.
I was in a high income occupation for years and worked with a lot of young guys who were making crazy money yet were still behind the eight ball because they'd buy expensive vacations, cars, motorcycles and other toys.
Said to myself, "that's not going to be me. . ."
When the party ended a lot of these folks were screwed with debt.
Slavery, in any form, sucks.
“I think it was patently obvious who I was referring to since I described the people in the previous sentence.”
Are you that dense? Yes, it is perfectly obvious to everyone who you were referring to. I was being sarcastic over your snotty reference to boomers.
“So the “plain meaning” of the Bible is flexible?”
You need to calm down and get a life. How people arrange their financial affairs, in accordance with established and mandated law, such as Social Security, is none of your business. As Jesus advised someone, worry about yourself.
What exactly was “snotty” about my reference to boomers? I just described them as being 5-10 years older.
I’m afraid this will be me. Programmer for 41 years. Eligible to retire with state benefits next year. No mortgage, no car payments, no life, no hobbies. I don’t need any more money because I will make more money retired than I make now which means IRA withdrawals will get taxed heavily.
Every year I can carryover 345 hours of vacation and I am sitting on 389 right now in June. If I tell my boss I need a week off, he freaks out so I work remotely the few times I go anywhere.
“Those people” is snotty.
Yes, you are dense.
“So our credit rating stays high in spite of no mortgage payments.”
Why do you need a credit rating?
No its not. You're hypersensitive.
I was responding to:
ridesthemiles, who posted:
“DOWNSIDE? Credit rating doesn’t show mortgage or rent payments & no car payments since 1984. I get punished !!!”
Your ? re why do we need a credit rating is an interesting one.
I have a CC that I pay off every month but I can’t imagine why I would need a credit score at this point. If I buy a car, I just transfer funds to do it. That was the whole point of saving for 40 years.
I do love that conservatives talk a good game about smaller government and reigning in government spending...until it's their pet program/project/"safety net"....those sacred cows are off limits.
Tell ya what. Just give me back what I paid in - and the time value of that money - and we can call it even.
You will have a great time. I enjoyed spoiling my wife in all number of ways. I built her a doll house that was 6’4” tall and 12’6” long that coming apart in modular sections was perfect for her hobby. I also enjoy cooking about half the meals as I was a Mess Sgt as a kid in the Vietnam era. We have gone wild boating, fishing, going to music concerts, operas, and political events.
We did that for four and a half years then I came down with serious cancer. It looks like I have beat it, but damn I am glad we went so many places. I am now moved to an entirely new area of the country with interesting scenery and history (North Carolina Coast) and I am buried in yard work making new gardens.
Keep everything paid for, enjoy new hobbies and meet new people. Above all, love your family.
my #136 goes for you too and I haven’t named a fourth of the things I have found to do — don’t get me started on harmonica collections...
One of my dreams is to move to the NC coast near Belhaven and buy a trawler.
only 50 miles from me...but I don’t want to deal with a boat anymore. I had a 20 foot deck boat, a dock, a lift, trailer, and etc for 17 years. I gave it to my sons in Michigan. I am getting too old to do the maintaining and repairs needed as well as the upkeep and expense.
