A House Democrat plans to introduce a bill that would hit AR-15's with a 1,000% tax — and it could pass Congress without GOP votes

The recent violence is prompting one House Democrat to draft a measure aimed at severely restricting access to the AR-15-style weapons used by different gunmen in the carnage. Rep. Donald Beyer of Virginia, a member of the tax-writing Ways and Means panel, wants to impose a 1,000% excise tax on assault weapons.

New AR-15-style guns range from $500 to over $2,000 depending on location, NBC News reported. That means a 1,000% tax on the weapon would add $5,000 to $20,000 to their final sales price — and would probably keep it out of reach from many younger Americans.

That probable outcome prompted Beyer to eye reconciliation, the legislative tactic allowing proposed laws to bypass the Senate's 60-vote threshold known as the filibuster and pass with a simple majority. Democrats employed the maneuver in 2021 to push through the stimulus law and the House-approved Build Back Better bill over united GOP resistance.

The latest democrat gun control ploy of the day. Knowing nothing will ever get 60 votes to overcome a Senate filibuster, they now are trying to backdoor gun control through reconciliation (which only needs a simple majority of 50).

While I have my doubts that they could even get 50 with Senators like Manchin and Sinema opposing assault weapon bans. It something to watch out for I suppose.

Oddly enough a poll tax was deemed to be unconstitutional because it infringes a key right.

I have to wonder how many Red/Purple area Democrats are saying “What the HELL are you guys doing!”

I laugh my ass off every time I hear a DEM claim to adhere to rule of law and the Constitution. It is glaringly apparent to these collective assholes that “...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED” means utterly nothing.

Yep. It also violates “Shall not be infringed” clause of 2nd Amendment.

MSN only plays the race card when it benefits the narrative. They don't play it even when it is appropriate, but doesn't benefit the narrative. It's propaganda, not journalism.

This does not infringe on your right to purchase a gun. It doesn't infringe on your right to purchase this particular gun if you have the money.

House Democrat should be forced to pay for their own security.

Expect more burglaries of gun shops, home invasions to secure weapons, and cross border illegal gun trafficking. Criminals will always find ways to secure the weapons they want.

If that were true, then poll taxes also don’t infringe on your right to vote, if you have the money.

If you don't have enough money to buy a gun of any kind then are your Second Amendment rights being infringed?

How long before you hear calls from mainstream Democrats to ignore the Constitution, it’s a racist document to begin with, judgements about the constitution are made by old white guy intent on preserving white supremacy, therefore we can ignore the constitution for the common good of society.

In the past I’ve thought this could never happen, today, I’m not so sure.

They may be quietly saying that, but when the time comes for a vote, only Manchin or Sinema might actually vote no.

I believe that's already been happening. My grandparents on my Dad's side were good people, RIP, but Grandma actually said something to that effect once, that the Constitution was outdated. And yes, they were liberal Democrats.

Yep. And the Democrats were behind that tax as well.

But you gotta give the Democrats credit for one thing. They run a great propaganda machine. Democrats were the slave owners. And they were the KKK members. And their policies keep most blacks poor today. Yet it’s the Republicans who are the racists.
