IOW, a meaningless gesture like the Kurds declaring an independent nation taken from its neighbors.

At least Yugoslavia was an internationally recognized sovereign nation from 1918 until the civil war of the 1990s.

I think their ability to make rockets has been degraded a little

The war has become quite nasty already.

Ukraine will not comply with the restrictions allegedly imposed on it by the Americans...

"Allegedly"?

I suppose that since Biden is a paper kitten, he won't do anything to stop them from firing from anywhere to anywhere.

“Ukrainian national identity dates back to at least the 17th century.”

Show me the internationally acknowledged maps of The Ukraine as a sovereign nation going back to the 17th century.

List the kings and presidents of sovereign independent Ukraine.

Kurdistan is also a fantasy. At least Yugoslavia was a real nation.

“likely be used on Russian artillery”

The Russians can make metal dummies easily and camouflage their real stuff.

It would be more accurate to say Ukraine was independent between 1918 and 1922. You are wrong when you say Ukraine was independent in 1917, it was autonomous not independent for that short time.

I don’t think anyone would seriously believe Ukraine was independent under the soul crushing totalitarianism of the USSR (of which the Russians were a victim of as well, Russians fought a civil war to try to escape the communists)

It was linguistic and cultural I believe, I suspect from Polish influence and control.

The Russians are grabbing the parts of the Ukraine that Moslems controlled, again.

There is also the factor that German and the Austrian Empire controlled much of the area in 1917 and the Russian military didn’t.

The people who wanted an independent Ukraine saw an opportunity.

There was an all out civil war in Russia against the communists from 1917.

So the independence of Ukraine was in that context of a power vacuum until the communists came to crush them after crushing Russia.

There is a linguistic map showing where Ukrainian was spoken made around 1914.

I can’t provide a link since I’m using an Android device instead of my now Internet incapable PC.

There was a lot of territory taken from Turkish control by Russia before 1800.

This current war is an outcome of the failed Minsk and Minsk II agreements
The Uke’s agree to anything, Europeans pledge to backstop the agreement.
Then, the Uke’s set out and break every element of their agreement.

This is not good for the Uke’s, and will not end well for the Uke’s

They were pressured into not implementing it by USA (and other countries, and nationalists in Ukraine like Azov and Right Sektor and Svboda). However Zelensky did campaign on implementing it, then sabotage it soon after being elected.
Once that happened the other side also undermine it

Putin agreed to stop the 2014 war (especially debaltselve battle was about kill a lot more) based on Merkel’s pleading that his autonomy concerns would be addressed with the Mink agreements that were never implemented.

Those new drones will be shot down fast. They operate too high to get away with that. Very vulnerable to SAMs.

There’s the knotty little issue of Russia annexing Crimea some time back by conquest. May not be nice, but it’s a way.
