The invasion Vladimir Putin thought would last days is now in its fourth month.

There's the old saying about shooting at a wall and then painting a target around wherever you hit so you could claim you hit the target dead center.

What the US is doing is another version in that whatever the Russian military hits with their strategy, the US will paint a target way off to the side and claim the Russians missed the target by a mile.

If the Ukraine leadership had chosen to abandon the country with the first shots, the Russians apparently were prepared to establish order, but I've seen no evidence that Russia went into the conflict expecting anything but a campaign lasting months.

Right. All those hundreds of destroyed vehicles and thousands of Russian dead around Kiev, Cherniv and Kharkov were just clever feints.
