San Francisco’s Lowell High School, regarded as one of the best in the nation, is seeing a record spike in Ds and Fs among its first batch of students admitted in fall 2021 through a new lottery system instead of its decades-long merit-based admissions.
Principal Joe Ryan Dominguez attributed the rise in failing grades to “too many variables.” Last month, Dominguez announced his resignation from the school district, citing a lack of “well organized systems, fiscal responsibility and sound instructional practices as the path towards equity.”
“Over a year of distance learning, half of our student body new to in-person instruction at the high school level and absences among students/staff for COVID all explain this dip in performance,” Dominguez told the Chronicle. “It is important not to insinuate a cause on such a sensitive topic at the risk of shaming our students and teachers who have worked very hard in a difficult year.”
It must be noted, however, that remote learning in Lowell began in fall 2020, when only 51 students reportedly received a D or an F. That first-year class was the last batch admitted through the old merit-based system.
Still, the latest data showed an increase in low grades among students in grades 10 through 12. But those changes were slight, the Chronicle noted.
The lottery system was born out of a long, contentious battle that began in the wake of George Floyd’s death. Proponents of the new system argue that the merit-based system was racist as it resulted in an underrepresentation of Black and Hispanic students, while opponents say it would harm Asian students – who make up the majority of Lowell’s population – and undermine the benefits of a competitive academic environment.

There is no way “remote learning began in Fall 2020”—I don’t believe it. All SF schools were firmly locked down from March 2020 on.
IF MERIT doesn’t count-—How do blacks explain NBA players——NFL players-—MLB players???
MERIT is ALL that counts for those multi-million contracts.
Trouble is we need more Lowell’s. Can’t believe we don’t have the capacity to produce more. Those that accept the new rules as they are and take it sitting down deserve what they get.
I was told Asians don’t get involved politically. Jury duty is selected from voting rolls-no fun for them. They also do their business in cash. Don’t trust the banks. It might explain why home invasions happen more in that community. One has a hard time seeing them as militants fighting for a cause.
Yes I’ve also heard Asians don’t like voting because they REALLY don’t want to be called to jury duty.
However thousands of Asians in SF registered to vote recently for the sole purpose of recalling two members of SF’s idiotic school board, and the recall effort was successful largely because of all the new Asian voters. Asians care about education A LOT.
I will put on my swami hat and make a prediction: Lowell High School will rig their grading system to turn Fs into Cs and Ds into Bs.
And I’m not trying to be sarcastic here. Before retiring I taught in an urban high school. Grades there were falling. The district took the easy way out. They modified the computer grading software to turn every entered grade less than 50% into 50%. We teachers hated that.
Anyway, our passing rate went way up. The kids didn’t know any more than they did before. But the administrators got to brag about the improved data. And that’s all that mattered to them.
That reminds me. Not too many blacks in SF anymore. Moved to the East Bay where it’s more affordable so what’s left that made the city go so far downhill?
LGBTQ crowd is too busy aligning with the far left and the Asians mind their own business. They won’t fight. Just look at all the black on asian crime going on throughout the country. The whit power structure is too scared to do anything-it’s thankless.
Where’s Rudy when you need him? At this rate it will require an Augusto Pinochet. Him and a few Bernard Goetz’s. Bernie for DHS head would be awesome(not Sanders).
