As I noted earlier, Putin had legitimate security concerns. NATO was pushing eastward without any regard for Russian sensibilities. And something very odd was going on in the Donbas region. Was Ukraine oppressing ethnic Russians there? Or was Ukraine just responding to Russian interference in the region? Who knows?
Regardless...if you’re going to start a bloody war you had better have a damn good reason. Innocents are going to get killed, and you risk an escalation by outsiders. Putin had his reasons. But they weren’t near good enough to start killing tens of thousands of people.
By the way, the same argument applies to George W. Bush and his invasion of Iraq. Bush had his reasons. But they weren’t near good enough. Putin and Bush are both war criminals.
That’s the way I see it. Your mileage may vary.
