I have never been a police officer, so I can’t presume to know about tactics to be used in a hostage or other violent situation. But, I am at a loss to understand why those police officers stood around for an hour while those children were slaughtered. While I am loath to say this, it seems the police were afraid of being shot and so they opted to let the children be shot. If this is true, none of those officers deserves to continue to wear a badge or carry a gun for even another minute.

I believe that your assumptions are correct, and sadly I would also venture a guess that the officers' actions to fall back and wait for reinforcements was departmental policy.

I would not want to be the county sheriff when he is up for re-election.
