Israel has told the United States it was responsible for the assassination of an Iranian Revolutionary Guards colonel last week, according to reports.
Colonel Sayyad Khodai was shot dead on Sunday by a gunman on the back of a motorcycle as he sat in a car outside his home in Tehran.
Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi has vowed to avenge the killing and the Revolutionary Guards blamed it on 'elements of global arrogance' - a reference to the United States and its allies, including Israel.
On Wednesday, the The New York Times reported that 'according to an intelligence official briefed on the communications, Israel has informed American officials that it was behind the killing.'
The source, who spoke to the newspaper on condition of anonymity, said Israel told US officials the killing was meant as a warning to Iran to halt the operations of a covert group within the Quds Force - the foreign operations arm of the Revolutionary Guards, Iran's ideological army.
Thousands attended Khodai's funeral on Tuesday in central Tehran.
Funeral prayers were led by the capital's top imam and Khodai's coffin was draped in the Iranian flag. Posters hailed him as a 'martyr'.
Khodai's killing comes as negotiations between Iran and world powers to restore a frayed 2015 nuclear deal stalled since March.

Since when does Israel have to explain their actions to us?
Sure Mossad did the assassination. Equally sure they did not tell the US they did it.
They may have told the US, if their intention was to claim for this particular assassination: Which the article seems to allude that’s exactly what Israel wanted.
They could have done or put a bug in someone’s ear to do it. A lot of factions in Iran who could have done it for their own reasons or at the behest of someone.
Why are they unhappy?

Two points: 1) The Iranians know full well that Mossad is deeply embedded within Iran. They have performed this type of assassination in the past. The Iranians knew immediately that this was a Mossad operation. The Iranians are anxious and fearful . They know that Mossad has the capability not only to assassinate key leaders but has pinpointed Iranian nuclear targets and has some capability to sabotage and destroy those facilities. The Iranians have not been able to make a single credible arrest. 2) Israel for political and operational reasons simply does not trust American intelligence agencies. They have good reason to believe that the current Biden/Kerry cabal is a bit too sympathetic to Iran. They want the US to know as little as possible about Mossad operations within Iran, the identity of the people involved, their methodology or support. Mossad knows what happened to the CIA’s covert operative within China who were most likely betrayed by a traitor within the CIA. Mossad’s operation within Iran is so critical to Israel’s security , that they would not endanger it in any way. Very much doubt any Israeli intelligence officer would have any discussion with American counterparts regarding anything to do with Mossad’s Iran operation. Much more likely this “leak” to the NYT was an American operation meant to assure Iran that the US had nothing to do with it and still wants to negotiate a new deal with the mullahs.
Israel doesn’t have to justify killing people who subsidize and train people who try to kill their citizens. Not to the US, not to the Euroweenies and, Lord knows, not to annelids like yourself.
Whoever leaked this should be shot
They don't owe us an explanation.
And we don't owe Israel a dime.
Yet every year, Israel comes to us with their hand out, demanding their welfare check.
So long as Israel is on our dole, we have a right to make demands on Israel.
They told the US after the fact.
Telling anyone in the Biden Regime would have been like telling Iran.

Much more likely this “leak” was an entire fabrication by the NYT.
There are times when I wonder if some of these reported Israeli assassinations are really the work of political factions in Iran killing each other for their own reasons. Several have been killed in the same way, drive by shooting outside their homes near their cars, or bombs attached to cars while driving. When there are repeated methods of attack on important people doing the work, and Iran does little to prevent them, it raise the question of who is really carrying out the attacks.
