Red flags systems are a great idea — if you expect the civil authorities to be competent - and have due process. Let's take what might have happened in this case. Juvenile makes violent plans, gets caught & arrested. I have no problem with him getting red flagged in the NICS system; even though the juvenile record gets exposed. However, you can't have that as just one line of defense. Because that does not work if the one civil authority in question (a judge) fails to act. And, there are other ways of getting weapons if you have no respect for the law (and are planning to shoot up a bunch kids) So, defense is needed in depth. To include in your school security plan an armed response.

Red flag would mean further delays and checks. Maybe a mandatory gun safety class where the instructor can make an assessment. Time to error on the side of caution rather than “sure kid, let me sell you body armor, a handgun, AR-15, a half dozen magazines, and a shit ton of ammo. Go have fun hunting or protecting your drug addict mom’s double wide!”
If you think committing a felony to purchase an illegal gun is easy.. I think you haven’t tried it. Comes with a pretty hefty jail sentence if you’re caught.
